The Research Behind Canine Inflammaging (And Why It's So New)

Our last post explained what inflammaging actually is — chronic, low-grade inflammation that researchers believe plays a role in a lot of what gets written off as “just getting older.” This post goes a level deeper: where the science actually comes from, what's been found so far specifically in dogs, and why so much of this is only now becoming public knowledge.
We think this matters. If you're going to hear a term like this from a pet nutrition company, you should be able to see exactly where it came from — not take our word for it.
It starts with a name: Claudio Franceschi, 2000
The concept of inflammaging isn't a recent discovery, and it didn't originate in veterinary science at all. It was introduced in 2000 by Claudio Franceschi, an Italian immunologist, as a way of describing something researchers had started noticing in aging human populations: a persistent, low-level inflammatory state that didn't come from any single illness, but seemed to run in the background of the aging process itself.
In the twenty-five years since, it's become a genuinely established area of human medical research — the kind of concept with its own body of published literature, ongoing studies, and scientific debate about mechanisms and implications. This isn't a fringe idea. It's mainstream gerontology.
Then: a long silence, as far as dogs are concerned
Here's where the timeline gets interesting. For most of those twenty-five years, essentially none of that research was being directly tested in dogs.
The most comprehensive review of inflammaging specifically in dogs and cats, prior to very recently, dates back to 2010 — and even that was more of an early framing of the question than a settled body of evidence. Veterinary aging research, as a field, has historically moved slower and with far less funding than human aging research. That's not a criticism of veterinary science — it's simply a reflection of where research dollars and institutional attention have gone.
What's changed recently
In the last couple of years, that's started to shift. Dogs have increasingly been recognized by researchers as a genuinely useful model for studying aging — they share our environments, develop many similar age-related conditions, and (unlike a lot of lab animals) age on a timeline that's slow enough to study meaningfully but fast enough to actually produce results within a research career.
One notable study drew on blood samples from the Dog Aging Project — a large-scale, ongoing research initiative tracking aging in companion dogs — and looked specifically at inflammatory markers across different dog age groups. What the researchers found was genuinely interesting: several markers associated with this kind of inflammation showed up in adult dogs, not only in dogs that would be classified as seniors. The most pronounced difference in the data wasn't between “middle-aged” and “senior” — it was between young dogs and essentially every age group that came after.

It would be easy to present that finding as a settled fact. It isn't, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
A separate, smaller study looking at similar markers in dogs didn't find the same clear pattern. That's not a contradiction that undermines the whole idea — it's exactly what you'd expect from a research area this young, where sample sizes are still small, breeds vary enormously, and methods aren't yet standardized across studies. Real science looks like this in its early stages: promising signals, some inconsistency, and a lot of “we need more data” alongside genuinely interesting findings.
We'd rather tell you that plainly than round it up into a stronger claim than the evidence actually supports.
Why we think this gap is worth talking about
Put the timeline together, and here's what you get: twenty-five years of human research, roughly two years of meaningful dog-specific research, and a veterinary profession that — like any medical field — takes time to fully absorb and apply new science into everyday practice.
That's not a failure of veterinary medicine. It's just what a young research area looks like from the outside, before it's had time to fully filter down into routine care. We think dog owners deserve to know that gap exists — not to create alarm, but because understanding where the science currently stands is the only way to make sense of what it might mean for your own dog.
